No doubt you’ve heard the hype about waist training and you know all your fave celebs are swearing that it really works, but do you really know what it is? Waist training is when you wear a restrictive garment (think a corset) to slim down your waistline. As with almost anything there are some risks and benefits to using one. Many people in the medical community suggest you shouldn’t wear one because there are many misconceptions about how to wear them and what they can and can’t do for you. If you’re thinking about using a waist trainer it’s important you fully understand them first.

Types of Waist Trainers

There are a lot of different types of waist trainers/cinchers on the market. So you need to find out which one would be best for what you want to achieve. There are some waist trainers that heat up your midsection as well as train it for example.

There is also a difference between corsets and cinchers. Most corsets are made of cotton and have laces to tie them together. Cinchers are commonly made from latex with hook and eye fasteners on the front. When most people think about corsets they picture the traditional ribbon or steel-boned corsets. Because corsets are tied together with lace there is a level of customisation as you can make it as tight (or loose) as you like.

Cinchers are something that can be worn every day and can reduce your midsection by up to 3 inches. There are also cinchers that should be worn during workouts. They are tougher than regular cinchers and stimulate perspiration (sweating) in the midsection. As a result they shouldn’t be left on for too long. No more than three to four hours a day at the most. Of course the idea that these kinds of products are a magical solution to getting a slimmer waist without work is a total fallacy. Even with a waist trainer you need to do some exercises and eat healthier to see any kind of long-lasting weight loss.

The Benefits and Misconceptions of Waist Trainers

It’s certainly true that wearing a waist-cinching garment can give you some temporary physical benefits including a smaller waistline and looking thinner. There are also some other possible benefits. Wearing a corset can provide proper back support and posture control for example. The material of the waist cincher can also provide extra abdominal support which can encourage you to sit up straight and not overeat.

Brad Thomas M.D, an orthpoedic surgeon and one of the founding partners of Beach Cities Orthopedics and Sports Medicine accepts these benefits are possible. He says that one of the most overlooked benefits of these waist cincher is that they can activate your core muscles and improve your posture. He says they could have a lasting benefit as long as people don’t wear them so tightly that they are crushing their organs and instead are just pulling in their tummy. It may not directly affect the shape of your waist but it does give you a gentle reminder to keep your core activated as you go about your day.

It’s important that you make waist training a supplement to a healthy diet and exercise regime and not a substitute for one. There is a bit of science behind the modern waist trainer and it’s the same science that goes into the “sauna suit” athletes wear to get rid of their excess water weight through sweat. The latex cinchers are made out of can increase thermal activity and stimulate perspiration. Basically it makes you sweat. Any weight loss you get from this will just be temporary water weight though and not lasting or substantial. It can still help you look your best for an upcoming event at least.

Waist Training Risks

Everything that is beneficial almost always comes with a risk and that is true of waist cinchers. The most common problems with waist trainers are having a decreased abdominal muscle tone, visceral displacement and they can also make your abdominal walls atrophy. There are other health risks too including a deformed stomach, liver and lungs as well as difficulty breathing and decreased lung capacity. You should never wear a waist trainer for too long.

Squishing together your abdominal organs (the liver, kidney, intestines, etc) is asking for trouble. It reduces blood flow to the organs and makes them less effective. It also pushes your organs upwards which reduces your lung capacity. So you are left unable to breath properly which makes it incredibly difficult to exercise.

However this squishing of the organs is a bit of a misconception. It can definitely compress your organs and be dangerous but this only happens if you don’t waist train properly. You should also remember that it is a long process. You should never wear your waist trainer for too long or too tightly to try and get speedier results. It just makes it dangerous.
